JAPN 313: Manga, Anime & Modern Japan (MLO 2) Compleated Spring 2012
Description:
This course uses Japanese manga and anime as modern mirrors that reflect the Japanese experience of rapid economic and social transformation over the past 150 years. From ancient Japanese styles of visual expression, this course traces how popular visual texts such as Manga and Anime sketch out a parallel world linked both historically and culturally to the imagined community of the Japanese nation-state.

Course Narrative:
Through this course, I was able to fulfill the MLO 2 requirements of this major because this course gave me a better understanding of the popularity and important Japanese anime and manga have for Japanese culture. Through this course, I watched many different anime that showed many different cultural elements that are very popular. One example comes one of the anime we watched in class called “Skip Beat.” Through this series, I gave a feedback sheet about how even though this anime is known as a girl anime with love and romantic atmosphere throughout the series; it has many different elements that allow both men and women to enjoy the show. An example of this was the insert of the different facial expressions that many of the characters made throughout the show. Because of this it made me realize about the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” while watching this show. It also made me realize that even though the series was a good one, it was too short. It made me feels that the producers just up and quit before even finishing the series. Although I have completed this class, there are some things that I have not completed fully in this course. One of those things is that I was unable to actually watch that many different types of anime in this class. So in order for me to fully grasp the idea of anime, I must do research about other anime series as well as do research about how many different types of anime there are in the world of Japanese anime and manga.
