MLO 5: Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion:
Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Japanese cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experience from which they have developed a personal understanding and new perspectives of the community.
School of Immersion: Nagoya University of Foreign Studies Fall 2013-Spring 2014
MLO Narrative:
This fulfilled MLO 5 because I spent a year in the country of the language I have been majoring as of right now. By being in Japan, I was forced to use the things I learned such as language and culture to help familiarize myself with how the country is like actually being there. It also made me realize that there were things that I was lacking that classes I took in college did not teach me. One example would be the idea of separating our trash. In America, I would just throw anything and everything into the trash without a care in the world. But in Japan, I had to actually separate my trash into different areas so that they could come and collect it. I even made a video of this idea in a class I took while I was there in Japan. Another example would be how the cars keep going by even though someone is walking by and how fast they were going. Whenever I walked through my area, I always felt that I would get hit by a car, even if I am standing on the curve three feet away from the street. It was very scary.
Because I only had a brief time in learning new things in Japan, I want to gain a better understanding of how different it is to actually be there in Japan from learning about it from the text book and how Japan as many different interpretations of the things we as Americans believe. From this experience, my next step would be to tell people about my experience and to what they should expect while going to the Nagoya area of Japan if they decided to go there.
