2.1
These courses allowed me to fulfill MLO 2 because these courses allowed me to learn about the culture that Japan has created and exposed to the world. In JAPN 215, I learned about the different aspects of Japanese culture that has made Japan popular. Some examples of this are how we learned about Japanese amusement parks and the pop idol culture. This course allowed me to learn about how much more there is to what makes Japan popular to the world. In JAPN 302, I learned about the different cultural aspects that Japan was able to gain throughout its history. One example of this was how Japan created its very own style of poetry known as Haiku. This course allowed me to learn that many popular cultures in Japan today came from things that were from Japan’s past. In JAPN 305, I was given a brief introduction on what Japan’s culture was like. One example of this was how we watched movies such as “Tales of Genshi” and “24 eyes” which allowed us to learn about how Japan was like during the time periods in which Japan was depicted in. This course allowed me to learn that each time period in Japan has had different styles of culture which have been somewhat different from one another.
2.2
For the course of JAPN 306, I was able to gain a better understanding on how the Japanese think in their society. An example of this was how Japan view on things such as promises to other people as well as how they think in their society. This course allowed me to gain knowledge on how the Japanese think and act in their own society as well as interacting with other countries. In JAPN 308, I was able to gain a better understanding on what Japan considers as popular culture in their society. An example of this was the type of music and films as well as hobbies they have in Japan. Thanks to this course I was able to gain more knowledge on what Japan considers as popular in their society. In JAPN 310, I was able to gain information about the different styles of film creation Japan has created. One example of this is how they were able to create the first giant monster movie known as Godzilla or Gojira which is popular around the world. Through this course I gained knowledge about how Japan’s movies were both similar and different to the films that are from America. In JAPN 313, I learned about the history and culture that comes from their drawing style and animation skills. An example of this was how that in each of the series we watch or read in this class, there was sometimes a hidden message or hidden theme in the series itself. Thanks to this course, I learned that Japan has a deeper meaning in Japanese manga and anime that I previously did not know about before I took this course.
